In May 2011, responding to the deep need for vocational reflection and leadership empowerment of young clergy women in the Diocese of El Camino Real, Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves helped coordinate and host the first Beautiful Authority (BA) conference. This event welcomed 19 women from across the country and one young woman from England
It was during this conference that the Rev. Danáe Ashley, currently Priest-in-Charge at St. Edward the Confessor in the Episcopal Church in Minnesota, began discerning the invitation made by the bishop for one of the participants to coordinate the next BA gathering. In the summer of 2011, Danáe began collaborating with the Rev. Dr. Valori Mulvey Sherer, Rector of Redeemer Episcopal Church, and the Rev. Augusta Anderson, Assistant Rector of St. James Episcopal Church, both in the Diocese of Western North Carolina, to form the 2012 conference.
We are delighted to announce the second gathering of the Beautiful Authority Conference for young clergy women 35 years and under. It will begin on Tuesday, June 5 and continue through Friday morning, June 8. The location for this event will be at the beautiful Mount Olivet Conference Center in Farmington, MN.
The scope of this year’s conference is the unique interplay of Maiden, Mother, Crone as the feminine expression of the Triune God and experienced by women in the totality of their lives. This theme will help guide the conversations on leadership and wellness, identity and ministry, core values and vocation.
We invite you to share this remarkable opportunity with any young female priests in your diocese who would benefit from the collegial conversations, including a planned Skype session with Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, as well as the intentional moments of renewal and rest that will be the touchstones of the June Beautiful Authority gathering.
Likewise, on behalf of the event coordinators for the 2012 conference, we invite you to consider a contribution to support the expenses of this gathering. This event is designed to be both affordable and accessible for young clergy women to attend. As most of these persons are in the early stages of their careers, and as the CPG 2010 report indicated, on the lower end of the pay scale, it is imperative that we help financially support this gathering. You can send monies directly online to: Beautiful Authority Donations and pay through the website or choose the check option to send a check with “Beautiful Authority–Donation” in the memo (this is vital so the ECMN can keep track).
