JS Bach's St. Matthew's Passion
Christ Episcopal Church of Red Wing and Mayo Clinic Chamber Symphony present Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew Passion, as Re-Imagined by Felix Mendelssohn and conducted by Dr. John A. Schultz.
In 1829, Mendelssohn presented Bach's masterwork to a Berlin audience after almost one hundred years of silence. Audiences in those times expected to hear contemporary music and rarely listened to music from previous generation. Felix Mendelssohn presented his musical ideas that re-created Bach's work for audiences of his day, without losing its original impact and narrative.
Joining forces for the performance in Red Wing will be the Red Wing Singers, the Motet Choir of Calvary Episcopal Church of Rochester, Christ Episcopal Church Chancel Choir, and the Mayo Clinic Chamber Symphony. Roy Heilman of Shoreview, MN as the Evangelist, Tom Hinniker from Rochester as Jesus, soprano Elizabeth Hillebrand also from Rochester, mezzo-soprano Barbara Lennon of Mendota Heights, baritone Bill Foot of Red Wing, and Rochester organist Brian Williams will be featured.
The program will be presented on Sunday, March 25, at 3 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 321 West Avenue, Red Wing.
There is no admission charge, a free-will donation is suggested.
