Launch Service for Multicultural Church Plant

people leading worship service people leading worship service

On Sunday, July 27 a new, multicultural and multigenerational Episcopal worshipping community was launched at St. Alban's in Edina. Sixty-four attendees from multiple Minnesota faith communities experienced an Evening Prayer service including contemporary music, gospel-based discipleship (in lieu of a sermon), more participatory Prayers of the People, and anointing.

Since January the Rev. Jeckonia Okoth and a team of Episcopalians have gathered monthly for prayer, to study scripture, and to discern the Holy Spirit's leading about what a more participatory, multicultural service might look like.

At a reception following the service, participants mentioned loving the upbeat music and hearing what fellow worshipers from the U.S. and around the world heard the Holy Spirit saying to them through the Gospel lesson.

This plant is part of the Bishop's strategy to continue to develop an Episcopal mixed ecology, meaning worshipping communities of different sizes in different places that speak to different populations. All Minnesota Episcopalians are invited to come worship with this new community so they can experience what the Holy Spirit is up to, and recommend it to interested friends. The next two services are August 31 and September 28 at 3pm at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Edina. This new worshiping community is centering discipleship by offering a Catechesis Series on the Four G's (God is Great, Glorious, Good, and Gracious), and a book study, What Does Your Soul Love? by Gem and Alan Fadling.

The first Catechesis meeting will take place at SK Coffee, located at 550 Vandalia Street in St. Paul, on the 1st floor of the Vandalia Tower on August 16, from 9-10:30am. The session will explore "What it means when followers of Jesus say GOD IS GREAT." Please register using this link
