Ascension, Stillwater seeks Interim Music Director
Ascension Episcopal Church in Stillwater Minnesota is seeking an Interim Director of Music/Organist. We are the oldest Episcopal Church in Minnesota. At the heart of our mission is the idea that we as the Episcopal Church in Stillwater are free to question. Ascension is a wonderful mix of people across our community. Our community loves to worship together and more importantly, loves to simply gather, celebrate and be together. We are a fun community teeming with vibrant ministries. We are passionate about mission and outreach. We have several amazing ecumenical partnerships in the Saint Croix Valley. We are forward-thinking in our theology and eclectic in our approach to liturgy. We are a solid Rite II (contemporary language) church and we strive to be more inclusive and use expansive language in our liturgy.
Ascension has a rich and varied musical program rooted in the Anglican tradition. We have an active adult choir, bell choir, and several small ensembles, in addition to a large library of music. We are blessed to have a Dobson tracker organ (Opus 30) and a Yamaha grand piano in our sanctuary, a Steinway upright piano in our rehearsal space, a set of Malmark hand bells, and a collection of Orff instruments. In addition to traditional sacred music, we include many contemporary works from a variety of genres periodically in our worship. We have had a decades long Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols tradition. In the past, our Youth Choir has released two CDs (one Grammy nominated), toured the United Kingdom, and performed in several holiday concerts with the Minnesota Orchestra led by Doc Severinsen. Ascension is a place where music matters.
We are choosing to place an interim director/organist in our church at this time because we have had the rare and wonderful gift of a 50-year dynamic directorship. We would like our Interim to help us hold space as we transition, ponder, and discern the future of our music ministry at Ascension. This is a part time position of 16-20 hours a week. We want our Interim to maintain our musical tradition and inspire us with a diverse blend of music. Compensation will align with the American Guild of Organist’s scale. The interim we select will have the opportunity to apply for the permanent position that we will open next spring.
Founded in 1843, Stillwater is known as the birthplace of Minnesota and housed a multitude of riverside mills that made the town “the lumbering empire” through the early 1900’s. It hosts one of the few remaining vertical lift bridges and connects the shores of Wisconsin and Minnesota across the St. Croix River. The City of Stillwater is federally recognized as a Preserve America Community and the downtown Main Street area is nationally registered as the Stillwater Commercial Historic District, which is home to over 100 owner-operated shops and restaurants. A popular destination for weddings, events and vacationers, the town of over 17,000 residents holds renovated historic homes, wineries and breweries, art galleries, a dozen churches, paddlewheel cruises and gondola rides to enjoy. The school system is highly rated with the high school activities, arts, and athletics programs often competing for statewide leadership and recognition. With the proximity to the Twin Cities, larger experiences can also be had for those wishing to venture a bit further. Stillwater is a unique and vibrant town that embraces its historic past and inspires community and connection for its residents. We hope you find it as engaging as we do!
