ECMN Convention 2021

ECMN Convention 2021

-

In consultation with the president of the Standing Committee and the vice-chair of Council, Bishop Loya, in his role as President of Convention, has made the decision to move Convention entirely online again this year due to extremely high COVID rates. Most elements of convention will be live streamed. Delegates will participate in the business portion of convention via Zoom, and anyone in the diocese is welcome to participate in Saturday morning worship and workshops via Zoom meeting.

AGENDA

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29

4pm: Voting Practice Session
All delegates to convention are invited and encouraged to attend this practice session to familiarize yourselves with the procedures or an online convention and with our new voting technology. A link will be sent to all registered delegates in advance of this meeting.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5

4pm: Convention Business Meeting
via Zoom

All clergy and lay delegates will gather virtually to conduct the business of the convention via Zoom, and will vote using a new technology called VPOLL. VPOLL is a voting tool accessed through a web browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.). This technology allows us to ensure credentialing and voting by orders. Each delegate will be given a unique access code. Ballots and voting items will appear on your screen at the appropriate time during the business meeting.

Please see here for the Business Booklet, which includes the items on the agenda for our time together.

Please see here for the Tech Guide, which will inform delegates of how to participate in the business meeting.

All delegates are still asked to register to receive access both to the zoom webinar and to the voting technology. Please register here if you have not yet done so. All registered delegates will receive detailed instructions regarding how to participate in the business meeting.

This meeting, including the Bishop's Address, will also be live streamed for any Minnesotan Episcopalian who wishes to watch.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6

Friday evening's business meeting will be live streamed on Facebook and Vimeo for non-delegates. All Minnesotan Episcopalians are encouraged to join in all Convention activities on Saturday, November 5.

9am: Diocesan-wide Morning Prayer - Register here.
10:30am: Workshops - Register here.
11:30am: Live stream of Bishop's Address
12pm: Workshops - Register here.

Workshop Information:

All are invited to participate in these workshops more deeply exploring our four priorities. Workshops will be held in two zoom sessions, and each session includes two workshops for you to choose from.

You will receive the Zoom link via email in advance of the workshops.

SESSION 1: 10:30-11:15am
A: Post-Pandemic VITALITY: Focusing on the Essentials

With Bishop Loya, Susan Daughtry, and a panel of ECMN clergy

As our congregations make decisions about their priorities for the coming years, all of us are looking at big questions. What do we keep? What are we called to let go of? What does it look like for congregations to follow the way of Jesus, relying on God’s promises? What choices and approaches help faith communities build that muscle memory? Join Bishop Loya and others for a deep dive into the four touchstones that we are focusing on as markers of congregational vitality. This panel discussion will include time for individual reflection, breakout discussion, and panel conversation as well.

B: DISCIPLESHIP & FAITHFUL INNOVATION: How do congregations hear God’s call to do something new?
With Christine Luna Munger, Director, Episcopal House of Prayer

As faith communities look to try new experiments in their neighborhoods, the first step is to ‘discern.’ But what does that mean? How do we hear what God is saying to us in the voices of our neighbors? And before that -- what questions are we asking, and who are we listening to?

Come prepared for teaching from Christine Luna Munger, solo time for reflection, and small group breakouts.

SESSION 2: 12-1:30pm
A: DISCIPLESHIP: Storytelling: Practical Skills to Deepen Your Relationship with God & Others

With Emilia Seay Allen, Missioner for Communications

How do you tell the story of what God is up to in your faith community? Our faith exists because people shared stories about their encounters with God, and because of the stories we are still discovering every day about God in the world. Join us for a practical, fun, skills-based workshop to practice telling and hearing heart-changing stories about the work God is up to in your life, in the life of your community, and in the neighborhood. Walk away with next steps to deepen your listening and storytelling practices. This workshop will be a highly interactive experience for folks who want to learn and try out new skills in a supportive environment. Come prepared to experiment, have fun trying things (and failing), and share a story of your own.

B: DISCIPLESHIP + JUSTICE: Praying Toward God’s Justice
With Heidi Kim

Following Jesus calls us to seek the Kingdom of God -- in the midst of the very real suffering and injustice of our society. Episcopalians have embraced the pursuit of justice in many ways in our daily lives; how can we ground that work in our prayers and discipleship? What does it look like when our racial justice and healing work is grounded in, discerned, and supported by our closeness with God?

This presentation-style workshop will build on the learning in the recent BishopX Forums. Come prepared to listen and to connect with others in small groups.

Register for workshops here.

AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE

There has been so much to grieve in the last 20 months. Deferring our in-person gathering for yet another year feels like one more casualty to add to an already huge and precarious stack of things we have lost. But we know that, in the midst of this loss, there have been many gifts, that our God is faithful, abundant, and good. We ask that each of you take some time to reflect on the gifts of the last twenty months and, if you feel so moved, record a video of yourself and tell us about those gifts. We'll compile a video of the blessings our siblings across the diocese have received this year to share.

How to Share Your Blessings:
Record a video of thirty seconds or less and share with us the best thing that has happened in your life, in the life of your family, your congregation, or your community, in the last 20 months.

  1. Use your phone camera!
  2. Begin by introducing yourself and stating where you're from.
  3. Upload your videos here by the end of the day on Tuesday, October 27th.

Email Emilia Seay Allen, your Missioner for Communications, with any questions: emilia.a@episcopalmn.org

CANCELLATIONS & REIMBURSEMENTS

Because we will no longer be in person, the cost of Convention will now be $40 for all delegates. Any delegate who has already paid will be issued a reimbursement, less the $40 fee. This amount will help to offset the costs of the technological support necessary to run an entirely virtual convention.

Hotel Cancellation
If you have reserved a hotel room for convention, please reach out and cancel that room. Each hotel has a 24 hour cancellation policy, so all hotel fees should be reimbursed.
